With social media creating a huge presence in today’s society, it
is not unusual to intern/job search through outlets like Twitter.
It is important to follow outlets that are broad and give tips
across the board, along with sources in the areas of interest for
work.
Two broad outlets that I follow include @YouTern and @FCADIC
(Internship Committee). Additionally, I follow @InternMemphis and @PRSAjobcenter, which are pages catered to my area of work interest.
To begin with, I like to follow @YouTern because it caters to the
traditional college market and promotes high-impact internships. Their main
stress is finding internships that will be beneficial for both parties and will
teach a lot. They offer tips and advice for branding yourself in order to land
big, important internships. They posts tweets like “Be the Best Intern: The 10
Must Dos for the World Class Intern,” “5 Skills that Immediately Improve Your Career Street-Cred,” and “No Such Thing as No Experience.” Each post allows you to weed through what you want to read and click links to find out more information. I like this page because it offers a wide variety of information in an easily accessed setting.
In addition, I follow @FCADIC (Internship Committee) because it speaks out against unpaid internships. Although I think unpaid internships could be beneficial to those with absolutely no experience, I do think unpaid internships are unethical as they require labor intensive work for no pay in return. I enjoy the laid back yet meaningful approach Internship Committee takes in making its point. It uses tactics of engagement to lure people in and interact with them, and provides information on unpaid internships to keep them
there. It is apparent that their tactic works because many people tweet at them and engage with them.
Following, I live in Memphis and am happy with the area and job market that is offered. Therefore, I follow two specific internship/job related pages to learn about job offers and events.
First, I follow @InternMemphis, which is offered by the University of Memphis. It simply lists internships currently available in Memphis for a variety of career fields. It does a good job of offering a wide range of different opportunities and not supplying to one major or one company.
Additionally, I follow @PRSAjobcenter because it is specifically for jobs in my career path. It also offers a list of job opportunities with a
hashtag and job city of where it is offered at the beginning of each post. I like it because it is easy to scroll through based on location. That is very important to me because I do not want to relocate far for my job due to family.
